Constitution Day (制憲節)

Constitution Day is held on July 17 to celebrate the enactment of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea on July 17, 1948 and to promote a law-abiding spirit among the Korean people while protecting the Constitution. Constitution Day is held on July 17 because the day when it was enacted also happened to be July 17, the day on which the Joseon dynasty was founded. Along with March 1st Movement Day, National Liberation Day and National Foundation Day, Constitution Day is considered one of the four major national commemorative days in accordance with “the Legislation on National Commemorative Days” enacted in 1949. However, in 2008 Constitution Day was excluded from the roster of public holidays, but it has retained its status of a national commemorative day.
