Teachers' Day is a national holiday held on May 15 to express respect for teachers' authority and to raise the spirit and social status of teachers by establishing a sound social climate in which teachers are respected and revered generally. This day was started in 1963 by the Ganggyeong Girls' High School's branch of the Korean Junior Red Cross in Chungcheongnam-do.
At first May 26 was a day for commemorating and thanking teachers' grace. The event was reported to the National Red Cross headquarters; and, subsequently, at the general assembly of the National Junior Red Cross held on May 17, 1964, Teachers' Day became official. After that, following a suggestion that May 15, the birthdate of King Sejong of the Joseon dynasty, might be a suitable date, the date was changed nationally. Following the Korean government's reforms (庶政刷新) of 1973, Teachers' Day was abolished, but it was reinstated in 1982 as a national commemorative day according to the “Regulations on Various Commemorative Days” in order to create an social atmosphere of respect for teachers.
