Dongguk Sesigi (東國歲時記, A Record of Seasonal Customs in Korea), records: "According to the Jincheon (鎭川) folk custom, between March 3 and April 4, women take shamans to the Dongseo-Yongwangdang Shrine in Udam (牛潭) and the Samsindang Shrine and pray to bear a son." In addition, the ancient book on geology and local customs titled Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam (東國輿地勝覽) records: "According to the Jeju custom, come spring men and women gather at the Gwangyangdang (廣壤堂) and Chagwidang (遮歸堂) Shrines and perform a ritual with offerings of meat and alcohol." The book also wrote that of the many poisonous snakes and centipedes found around the shrines, the gray snake was believed to be the god named Chagwisin, so it was not permitted to kill it.

Also on "Samjitnal," or the third day, villagers performed the Dodanggut Exorcism to wish for good health and a long life. One of the most representative forms of the ritual has been performed at the Bonghwasan Dodang Shrine located in Jungnang-gu, Seoul. On the third day of the third month of the lunar calendar, as it was believed, the downy hair of a baby should be cut to promote hair growth and a healthy scalp. Villagers would also predict the coming year by looking at the color of butterflies in the mountains and fields. In the South Gyeongsang region, on "Samjitnal," people would cut off locks of hair and throw it in a flowing stream, a local custom expressing wishes for healthy hair.
