Opening Remarks

How is Jeong Yak-yong (1762–1836, pen name Dasan) remembered today? He is most remembered as a prominent scholar of the late Joseon period, belonging to Silhak(Realist School of Confucianism), the author of Mongmin simseo (Admonitions on Governing the People) , and the architect of the Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon. Jeong is widely recognized for his intellect and various achievements, but what kind of father and husband was he to his beloved family?

Hapicheop: A Sunset-Yellow Skirt Turned into a Calligraphic Album

In his youth, Jeong Yak-yong found himself intrigued by Catholicism and became embroiled in the Catholic Persecution of 1801, leading to his exile to Gangjin, Jeollanam-do, until 1818. During his exile, his wife, Hong, sent him the sunset-yellow skirt she brought with her as a newlywed. He cut the skirt into pieces and reconstructed them into a calligraphic album, now known as Hapicheop. This album contained fatherly advice that he wished to convey to his two sons.

Jeong Yak-yong’s Heartfelt Messages as a Father

Jeong Yak-yong is known to have produced a total of four volumes of Hapicheop, only three of which remain today. The first volume empathizes the importance of “establishing a grounding in solidarity with the familial community,” the second advises “cultivating the body and mind through self-awareness and practicing frugality,” and the third encourages “internalizing academic knowledge as well as life skills to prepare for the future.”

Treasure Hapicheop Unveiled

In 2010, Hapicheop was designated as a Treasure, and it is now being unveiled to the public for the first time in celebration of the second anniversary of the National Folk Museum of Korea, Paju. This exhibition aims to highlight the fatherly aspects of Jeong Yak-yong, such as his great longing and affection for his family, rather than on his roles as an official and a scholar. Visitors will have an opportunity to witness Jeong’s parental love and teachings, which transcend time and continue to resonate in the present age.
