Men stayed in sarangbang to study and prepare for the state examination to become a government official. In the Joseon period, becoming a government official was the way to success and to bringing honor to the family. The state examination was divided into the liberal arts examination and the military service examination. The former selected civil servants for the administrative works of the country and the latter selected military officers for military affairs. Civil servants and military officers wore samo and danryeong. One could tell civil servants from military officers by looking at the rank badge, or hyoongbae. The civil servants had a crane and the military officers had a tiger embroidered on their badge.
