Honlye, or wedding, is a ceremony where a man and a woman come together to become husband and wife. This ceremony was considered the most important and significant event as it was the first step of forming a new family. For this reason, the bride and the groom were given a chance to wear the glamorous ceremonial attire from the palace. The groom wore a danlyeong and a samo, and the bride wore a hwalot and wonsam with a hwagwan or a jokduri on her head. The wedding ceremony customs still remain to this day. After a western-style ceremony, the couple participates in an event called pyebaek. The groom and the bride change into a danlyeong and hwalot, respectively, and bow to the elderly members in the family.

Bridal outfit

Brides wore a red hwalot or wonsam for the wedding ceremony. On their head, they wore a decorated hwagwan or a jokduri with their braided hair down with a long daenggi. For shoes, they wore a pair of ggotsin.

Grooms' outfit

Grooms wore a danlyeong, a ceremonial robe worn by the government officials in the Joseon era, for the wedding ceremony. They wore a samo on their head, gakdae around their waist, and a pair of long boots called mokhwa.
